For my last lake district wedding of 2014 I shot the St Bega’s and Armathwaite Hall wedding of Jill and Han. The ceremony was held in the beautiful St Bega’s Church, which sits half a mile from the road in the grounds of Mirehouse. It stands by a stream that leads into the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake. It is one of the prettiest and most idyllic churches in the lake district and has a long and fascinating history. Lord Alfred Tennyson stayed at Mirehouse in 1835 while he was writing his poem ‘Porte D’Arthur’ and St Bega’s Church inspired the opening lines:
‘… to a chapel nigh the field
A broken clancel with a broken cross,
That stood on a dark straight of barren land..’

The fact that the weather was cold and sunny, with snow on the fells, just added to the romance of the scenery.
This was my second time of meeting Jill, as I had shot her sister Katie’s borders wedding a couple of years previously at the stunning Langley Castle, So it was lovely to see the couple again who impressed me by being so organised that they had bought wraps of hand warmers with them and were giving them to all the guests to keep their hands warm.
After the ceremony we walked across field to take some beautiful shots by the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake and then headed back to a warm welcome and a much needed drink at the Armathwaite Hall for the reception.
Armathwaite Hall is magnificently set in 400 acres of deer park and woodland, bordered by the beauty of Bassenthwaite Lake and framed by the dramatic Skiddaw mountain and lake district fells and its interiors are every bit as romantic as the surrounding countryside. And if that’s not enough it also has state of the art spa facilities.
After a delicious wedding breakfast and the speeches there was a surprise video message from Hans’s family and friends in Hong Kong and Australia. Both locations where the couple plan to have more wedding celebrations in 2015. (Do let me know if you need a photographer!)
Evening entertainment was provided by five piece live band ‘Highly Strung’ who saw that Jill, Han and their guests were dancing well into the evening.
A beautiful ceremony, and a friendly and elegant reception at a stunning venue and all set in breath taking countryside. Congratulations Jill and Han for getting married and creating such a memorable day for yourselves, your family and your friends to remember.
