MILLER HOWE | WEDDING story of Kelly & Paul
How did you both meet?
At work (Paul was my boss!)
Tell us about the proposal?
It was on 5th July 2013, my birthday and the day before my due date (I was 9 months pregnant with our son Lucas). Paul took me to Storrs Hall Hotel for dinner, the first place we ever went together in the Lakes, and before we ate he took me on a walk to the Temple on the water. I was enjoying the beautiful views and when I turned around he was on one knee with the most beautiful ring and asked me to marry him. I cried and cried and eventually said yes!!! When we went back to the restaurant the staff were a little concerned I may have given birth with the excitement but greeted us with a glass of champagne each! Lucas was born 9 days later!!
Why a lake district wedding?
We always knew we wanted to get married in the Lakes – it was always the place we went to on a day off together or a night away. After getting engaged on Lake Windermere there was no other choice!!
Tell us about your wedding venue & why you chose Miller Howe?
Miller Howe Hotel was a bit of a hidden gem!! Paul had heard about it in the past but we had never visited before. A week after getting engaged Paul came across it online and took me for a visit. From the moment we arrived we knew it was special – the views as we drove in were second to none. We received the nicest welcome from Nigel (the hotel manager) who took us around the hotel and put together a completely bespoke package from us which included everything we had discussed amongst ourselves. After a visit with our parents and an amazing meal with delicious food and superb service we booked!! The hotel and staff were amazing from start to finish and could not do enough for us and it was beyond any doubt that we made the right decision.
What was your colour scheme or wedding theme?
We went for charcoal grey and pinks for our colour scheme and tried to keep a vintage/antiquey feel to the decorations. Everything fitted perfectly with the style of the hotel.
Tell us about your dress?
My dress was the complete opposite to what I had imagined, rather than lace and sleek fitting, it was a satin princess ball gown with pearl detail and an amazingly long train and I absolutely loved it!! My chapel length veil and tiara made me feel like a princess!! I only wish I had a reason to wear it again!!
Did you have ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?’
My something old was a pearl necklace from my Nan, new was my dress, borrowed was the hoop underskirt from one of my bridesmaid and for my something blue I had a sapphire ring again from my Nan but I couldn’t wear it for the ceremony because of my engagement ring so my mum wore it for me. I didn’t want to tempt fate by not having anything blue on me for the ceremony so I also had blue knickers!!!
What was your favourite photograph and why did you like it?
It is so hard to pick just one but the photographs of the two of us in the grounds as the sun was setting were absolutely stunning. The views and lighting were amazing. Also any photographs taken of our boys are favourites obviously! And all the rest!!
What was your most useful source of wedding ideas and information?
The Internet and friends and family. My hair dresser and make up artist were friends of friends and travelled from Lancashire yo the hotel on the day of the wedding which was amazing!
Tell us about a supplier who provided a first-class service.
To be honest all the suppliers we used were amazing. Miller Howe were fabulous from start to finish. Grassmere gingerbread supplied our favours and they were amazing value, delivered the favours to the venue and were delicious (as always). Fiona in the lakes performed all day for us and got exactly the right atmosphere for our day. We had issues with the suits for the guys the week before the wedding and Moss Bros hire in Preston sorted everything without issue. Our stationary was done by Charlotte Designs based in Lytham St Anne’s and was beautiful and exactly what we wanted! Hair and makeup were fab – there was no one we could fault! Oh and obviously Derwent Photography were amazing- Steve completely understood what we wanted from our photos and did not disappoint!!!
Do you have any advice for future brides?
Enjoy every second of it from the planning to everything on the day!! Try not to get stressed about it all – it is over so fast on the day and everything always works itself out!! And ask loads of advice from your suppliers – they know what they are doing!!
What was the best part of your wedding day?
All of it – the whole day and getting to spend it with so many of the people we love!!
Was Steve from Derwent Photography the right wedding photographer for you?
Absolutely!!! I knew without doubt he was right from the first time I visited his website – and my now husband agreed completely. After meeting with him we were convinced he was the only photographer for us and we could not have been more right! He was professional and discreet and took amazing photos!! Everyone has commented on how amazing he was on the day and loved the photos he took. We would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone!! Thank you so much Steve!
