CHURCH & FARLAM HALL | WEDDING story of Ali & Adam

How did you both meet?

Long story!! The shortened version is… Adams parents have their family home in a village outside of Carlisle called Grinsdale. My parents used to live in Carlisle 20 years prior to us meeting. Through mutual friends my parents found out that Adams parents were renting out a barn next to their house for holiday lets. When I was 7 (Adam was 10) we came for a week for a family holiday to stay in the barn (first ever barn tenants). Subsequently I became friends with Adam’s sister and we then spent a week at each others houses every summer holiday (being swapped by parents at J19 on the M6) In our teenage years we lost touch slightly and Adams sister moved to Australia. In 2011 she got married and invited me to the wedding. I decided to go and love blossomed in the sunshine with my friends older brother!! (Adam!) On return from Australia it wasn’t long until I made the big move oop north and the rest is history!

Tell us about the proposal

The following year after I moved up to Carlisle Adam and I went back to Australia to see his sister who had had a new baby. I thought we were going to the airport during our trip to go to Newcastle (in Australia) to see some old friends of Adam’s. On arriving at the airport I discovered we were in fact going to Hamilton Island (where his sister got married the previous year in the Whitsundays) for two nights. Proposal did cross my mind but when it got to the second day I thought nah he would have done it by now. On the second day I was told in the morning to be ready for 11.30am. I was then whisked off for a helicopter tour of the Whitsunday Islands (STUNNING) and the next surprise was that we were landing on Whitehaven beach for a champagne picnic! Once the champagne was poured and the picnic opened, Adam got down on one knee. What a proposal!

Why a lake district wedding?

We both live in Carlisle and love visiting the lakes regularly. Although traditional to marry in the brides home town I wanted a reason to get all my family and friends up north to welcome them in to my new life. Plus the venues we found were perfect for what we wanted our day to be.

Tell us about your wedding venue and why you chose that location?

We wanted an intimate day, focusing on quality rather than quantity so we had a few venues.

St Marys Church Beaumont – The nearest church to Adams family village of Grinsdale (who’s church is no longer open), and a small and beautiful church so it was jam packed with our guests.

Farlam Hall, Brampton – A stunning venue which we could have all to ourselves. We wanted a small, high quality meal which would be relaxed but professional and the venue delivered perfectly. Thanks to the beautiful weather we were able to enjoy the grounds to their full potential to relax between venues.

Fantails, Wetheral – Wetheral is a beautiful village on the outskirts of Carlisle and Fantails is another venue which produces extremely high quality food and drink, with fantastic staff and a relaxed atmosphere. Again we were able to hire the whole venue and enjoy the beautiful garden too. The buffet was a wedding buffet like no guests had seen before with a huge range of food cooked to an extremely high standard. The bar was well stocked too!

What was the colour scheme or wedding theme?

We didnt really have a set theme, we were just lucky everything came together really well! The colour scheme was pastels so the bridesmaids and mens ties were pastel pink and we all had pastel colours in our flowers. The flowers were all wild flowers with tea cups and jugs of wild flowers on the tables. We really just wanted our style to suit the venues who all had their own beautiful looks so there was very little we needed to do other than compliment them. I suppose if anything our style was traditional, simple and elegant.

Tell us about your wedding dress

I went shopping for a completely different dress to what I came home with. I thought I wanted simple / beachy but this just didnt suit me. The lady in the shop (Wedding Essentials – Newcastle) was fantastic at recommending dresses more suited to my style / shape and when I tried my dress on it just fit perfectly and really suited the venues. It was very traditional and lacy, but simple. I had no train as I wanted it to be easy to move about during the day, particularly as I had a baby to run about after!

Did you have ‘something old, somthing new, something borrowed, something blue?’

Yes. Old – A hair clip from my mother (just turned out to be a scabby kirby grip!) New – dress Borrowed and blue – my sister’s garter

Which was your favourite photograph and why did you like it?

Too many to choose from. Overall we just love how the photos really capture the essence of the day and tell the story of the day as it happened. Personally there are a few of me and my daughter I love, particularly the ones of her in the buff!

What was your most useful source of wedding ideas and information?

My bridesmaids! All 3 of them are married so brilliant at tips for planning the day and fantastic at being prepared to look after me throughout the day too.

Do you have any advice for future brides?

During the day, frequently take a step back and take it all in, and remember it. I have a terrible memory particularly when emotion is involved but as people told me to do this, I did, and I can remember the day really well and I really took it all in during the day and savored it.

What was the best part of your wedding day?

The whole thing. It ran so smoothly and everyone loved it. The weather was more than perfect.

Was steve from Derwent Photography the right wedding photographer for you?

Absolutely. We loved Steve’s relaxed attitude and how he got right in there without being obtrusive. He was perfect for our day, relaxed yet professional. We completely trusted him to capture the day and didn’t feel we had to ask him to do anything. We also love his photography style.
