CHURCH & ASKHAM HALL | WEDDING story of Julie & Matt
How did you both meet?
We met at a Rugby Tournament in Annan in 2009. I was there ‘watching’ rugby and Matthew was there playing rugby. After the games had finished there was a band and drinking in the marquee. My mums friend was trying to get me set up with someone else when I said: Actually I quite like the look of him and pointed at Matthew-she immediately called Matthew over and that was that!
Tell us about the proposal?
We had been at Askham Hall wedding fair last September and loved the look of it but got the vibe weddings were booking up fast. This was obviously the little push Matthew needed as when we got home later that night he proposed to me in the hall of our house on one knee! He had bought the ring months before at an antique auction! We then celebrated into the early hours with Matthew’s brother and wife.
Why a lake district wedding?
Matthew is from Kirby Stephen and I am from Dumfries we thought it would be quite good to have somewhere half way-ish between both and of course the lake district is gorgeous!
Tell us about your wedding venue, Askham Hall & why you chose it for your wedding?
Askham is a really pretty village and Askham hall itself and the barn are just amazing. We knew as soon as we went it was perfect. They are a lovely team there and exclusive use of the hall for us and our wedding guests was perfect as we could make a whole weekend of it. I loved the fact we were one of the first weddings there too! We chose St Peters as we wanted a church wedding and thought it would be easier for everyone if they were in the same location. We went to St Peters Church for a few services before our wedding and they were all very welcoming and excited by all the weddings coming to them from Askham Hall.
What was your colour scheme or wedding theme?
Matthew loves books; one day on Etsy I found the Feel Good Invites shop. They had a penguin classic book design invite which just suited us perfectly and became our theme. All of our table names were books which we had read and had happy (ish) endings.
Tell us about your wedding dress?
My dress was made for me by the very talented Sarah at Mia bridal in Carlisle. She designed the whole dress and the lace jacket was handmade by Sarah herself. It was very traditional and lovely to wear.
Did you have ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?
I had something new-my Tiffany earrings Matthew bought me but I forgot to put on my garter which was my something borrowed and blue and I forgot about my something old too-so no!
What was your favourite photograph and why did you like it?
There are too many to choose from I love them all! We both loved the one in church which is in black and white and Brian and I are standing at the door in the sunlight about to walk down the aisle, the effect is lovely. Best comedy one is definitely matt having a pee outside the church with his brother!
What was your most useful source of wedding ideas and information?
Pinterest was great for Ideas. Magazines and friends who were recently married were best for knowing what to do and when!
Tell us about a supplier who provided a first-class service.
Sarah at Mia bridal in Carlisle She really is a lovely person and amazing at what she does. It’s like going to see a friend when you go in for your fittings.
But I do have to say that everybody we used for our wedding was amazing and we would use all the same people again.
Was Steve of Derwent Photography the right photographer for you?
Yes absolutely. The best thing about Steve being there on our wedding day was that I forgot he was there! That’s exactly what we wanted. The photos are all so natural with just the small number of staged ones to keep everyone happy You can tell straightaway he knows what he is doing and enjoys what he is doing. One of my friends has already said she would use him for her wedding and so many people have said they are the best wedding photos they have seen 🙂
